Kyte Review – Complete Review

Kyte is a San Francisco-based car rental start-up that has recently thrown its hat into the subscription service market. Kyte currently services parts of San Francisco, Boston, and Los Angeles.

As a software company, Kyte partners with local fleet owners such as car rental companies, dealerships and leasing companies to service their subscription territories.

What does a Kyte subscription look like?

Customers choose from a class of car – either economy, sedan, or SUV – and pay a set monthly price to subscribe to the car for 28 days. This monthly fee is different for each class of car and covers maintenance and delivery of the vehicle, along with optional liability and damage coverage. This period of 28 days can be renewed indefinitely.

How much does it cost?

Each subscription comes with a one-time service fee of $199. After that, each of the three available classes of cars comes with their own monthly fee. Economy will cost $494 per 28 days before tax, while sedans come in at $532 per month, and SUV’s at $606 per month.

Where does it operate?

Kyte currently operates in parts of San Francisco, Boston, and Los Angeles.

How do I sign up?

Head over to Kyte’s website and select the subscription option and fill out the address of, and day and time at which, you’d like your car to be delivered. You’ll then be presented with a choice between the three available classes of vehicles. Select which class you’re interested in and select whichever customization options are available. Then you’ll be prompted to fill out your personal and payment info, including your driver’s license. Kyte will do a quick credit and driver history check, and if everything checks out you’ll be all set to get your new car.

Am I eligible for Kyte?

You’ll have to be at least 25 and have a valid driver’s license and payment method. It’s of note that Kyte doesn’t accept prepaid, or debit, cards.

How long do I have to wait for my new car?

Once you’ve been approved, you’ll have your new car delivered on the day and time that you’ve selected.

Can I try the service before I commit to it?

Kyte doesn’t currently offer any kind of trial period.

Can I swap vehicles?

You can cancel your current subscription and enter into a new subscription anytime. Just know that if you cancel prematurely, you’ll be charged the remainder of your agreed upon monthly term.

How do I cancel Kyte?

If you want to cancel, just text, call, or email Kyte and let them know. You’ll be charged for the current full month.

Kyte vs. Lease

Kyte is more like a long-term rental than a lease or short-term rental program. Obviously, Kyte offers an all-inclusive monthly fee that’s similar to other subscription services, but like the other rental companies that offer subscription options, Kyte still owns their cars and refers to subscribed cars as “rentals”.

Which cars are available?

Kyte doesn’t specify which models they carry, but they cite the Nissan Versa as the standard for the economy class, the Hyundai Elantra for the sedan class, and the Jeep Compass for the SUV class.

What is included in the Kyte monthly price?

Your Kyte monthly prices covers a mileage allowance, maintenance, and delivery. There’s an optional damages and liability coverage that you can opt into for an extra charge. Outside of that, you’ll have to provide your own insurance.

You can expect to receive around an allowance of 1,500 miles per month – though Kyte says they will consider mileage on a case-by-case basis if you request it.

As with Kyte’s rental service, their subscription service offers easy to schedule delivery of their cars right to you.

What is not included in the Kyte monthly price?

Comprehensive insurance coverage is up to you, as are roadside assistance service and excess mileage fees. There’s also the one-time initial fee you’ll pay for each subscription, as well as the optional coverage you can opt-in to.

Is Kyte right for you?

Kyte’s service is refreshingly simple and straightforward. Pick your car and when you want it delivered, enter your info, and then get your car. Yes, it’s kind of annoying that they don’t include comprehensive insurance and roadside assistance, but compared to most other services, Kyte – at least – feels like it makes everything easy. If you’re not interested in a specific model of car and just need something to get you around and get the job done, I’d check out Kyte.
